On chilled ducts and pipes, the insulation keeps the surface warm and the vapour barrier keeps humid air away from the cold metal. A torn facing, an unsealed joint or a hanger that pierces the barrier lets moisture in, which condenses, soaks the insulation and drips through the ceiling. In the humid coastal cities of Saudi Arabia, this is the most common insulation defect. Good insulators treat every joint, hanger and penetration as part of the barrier.
Insulation is not one material. Duct work commonly uses glass wool or rock wool blanket with foil (FSK) facing, or closed-cell elastomeric sheet. Piping may use preformed sections, and outdoor or industrial lines are finished with aluminium or steel cladding. Each system has its own adhesives, tapes and details at supports. State the system and thickness in the RFQ, and insulators are matched to the one on your job.
Insulation goes on after the duct or pipe has been pressure or leak tested, and before ceilings, shafts and risers close. Too early, and damaged insulation is cut open for test repairs. Duct insulators usually follow the duct fitters floor by floor, with helpers moving material and cleaning up offcuts. On industrial lines, scaffolders build access first and insulators work behind them, sometimes with cladding specialists finishing the jacketing. A supervisor or foreman coordinates the handover from testing to insulation to ceiling close-up.
