Request a quoteA welder can only work with the joint presented to them. Poor alignment, wrong gap or an out-of-tolerance bevel produces repair work no matter how good the welder is. This is why fitters and welders are better requested together: when both sit in the same supplied crew under one supervisor, the interface between them is managed rather than argued about.
A pipe fitter installs and fits up in place, on the rack or in the trench. A pipe fabricator works in the shop producing spools from drawings. The rate card lists them separately because the working environment and the skills differ. Say whether the work is site installation or shop fabrication.
Fit-up for welding is only part of the work. On most plant jobs, fitters also install pipe supports and guides, make up flanged joints with the right gaskets and bolt sequence, and prepare lines for pressure testing by fitting blinds, vents and drains to the test pack. If your scope includes controlled bolting to a torque or tension value, or reinstatement after the test, say so in the RFQ. That is the difference between a fitter who can take on the full scope and one who only fits up joints.
Pipe fitters are most productive in a small cell: a fitter preparing and fitting up joints, a welder qualified to your procedure, and a helper who moves, cleans and grinds. Riggers join where spools are lifted into racks, and scaffolders build access ahead of the crew. Send the line list, and the ratio of fitters to welders is proposed for your scope rather than taken from a fixed rule.
