Proper erection requires exact dimensional tolerance. Erectors use plumb bobs, optical levels, laser alignment, and calibrated torque wrenches to check column verticality, beam deflection limits, and bolt tension. Joints are prepared, fitted and torqued to the project's structural drawings and quality requirements.
Erection is work at height, and the safety rules are strict. Erection scopes may require fall-protection equipment, tool tethering, and hot-work or critical-lift permits. Required PPE and training records are confirmed against each site, and worker documents are reviewed per project before mobilization.
A partly erected frame is at its weakest. Until bracing is in and connections are final, columns and beams depend on temporary bolts, guys and props, and a crane should not release a member until it is stable. Good erectors follow the erection sequence that keeps the structure stable at every stage and do not remove temporary works early. Share the method statement and the temporary works design, so erectors are briefed on them from the first day.
An erection crew usually combines lead erectors and bolters with Level III riggers slinging and signalling, a crane operator matched to the crane, and structural welders for field welds. A supervisor or erection foreman holds the sequence and the method statement, and scaffolders build access where bolting cannot be done from the steel itself.
