Most broken glass on a project breaks before it is fitted: when it is unloaded, stored, moved across the floor or lifted to the opening. Large insulated units can weigh hundreds of kilograms, so glass fitters work with vacuum lifters, glass trolleys and, on facades, cranes or hoists with riggers. State the largest unit size and weight on your job, and whether handling equipment is on site, so the crew is sized and matched for it.
Glass is held in different ways. Dry glazing uses gaskets and pressure plates. Wet glazing uses sealant. Structurally glazed facades bond the glass to the frame with structural silicone, which needs clean surfaces, primer, curing time and quality records. Each method has its own sequence and checks. Not all glass work is on the facade. Frameless partitions, glass doors with patch fittings and floor springs, and glass balustrades with clamps or channels are finishing work inside the building, where tolerances are visible and the surrounding finishes are already complete. Say whether your scope is facade, internal or both, because the tools, protection and pace differ.
Glass installed early sits beside grinding, welding, plastering and painting for months. Weld spatter and grinding sparks pit glass permanently, and cement and paint are hard to clean off coated glass. Fitters protect installed glass with film or boards and remove it at handover. Agree the protection method, and who is responsible for it after installation, so damaged glass is not first discovered at the final inspection.
Glass fitters usually work behind the aluminium fitters: frames go in, then the glass. A glazing crew is typically fitters with helpers moving and holding units, riggers when units are lifted by crane or hoist, and a facade foreman or supervisor checking quality. Send the unit sizes and elevations, and the crew is proposed together.
