What they do on site

  • Weld plate in the 3G vertical position to procedure
  • Prepare and fit up joints before welding
  • Meet visual and NDT acceptance criteria
  • Work to hot-work permit requirements

What a 3G qualification covers

3G is a plate test welded in the vertical position, usually vertical-up. Passing it shows the welder can control the weld pool against gravity on plate, which is the everyday condition on tank shells, structural connections and vessel work. A 3G plate qualification does not cover pipe welded in the fixed positions most plant piping needs. That requires a 5G or 6G pipe test, so name the joints on your job before choosing the grade.

3G or 6G: when paying for 6G is wasted

6G welders are the highest-qualified welding request on the register, and they are in the shortest supply during shutdowns. If your work is plate and structural, in the flat, horizontal and vertical positions, a 3G welder is the right request and is usually easier to source for your dates. Keep the 6G request for pipe that will be radiographed, and put the plate work on a separate 3G line in the same RFQ.

Tank and vessel work has its own details

Storage tank shells and vessel seams are long vertical joints, often welded from both sides and inspected by radiography or ultrasonic testing at set intervals. State the tank or vessel code your job follows, the plate thickness and whether the welding is manual or uses a semi-automatic process. A welder who has worked on tank shells will manage distortion and sequence better than one moving from light structural work.

What to check before they start

  • Check the WPQ covers the 3G position, the process and the plate thickness range on your job, not just the word 3G.
  • Ask for the continuity record with the WPQ, so you can see the welder has used the process recently enough to stay qualified.
  • If your site retests welders, run a 3G plate test before production welding and send the test details with the RFQ.
  • Check the first vertical welds for undercut, overlap and profile against your acceptance criteria before the welder moves on.
  • On tank or vessel work, confirm the welding sequence and distortion control method with the welder before the first long seam.

Typical crew shape

3G welders usually work with fitters or fabricators who prepare and tack the plate, helpers who handle material and grind, and a supervisor who manages the welding sequence. On tank work, scaffolders build access around the shell as it rises, and riggers join when plates are lifted into place. Send the scope and the crew is proposed together.

How to request this trade

  1. 1

    Send the requirement

Trade, headcount, site location, start date, duration and shift pattern. Anything you can add about site access and permit requirements shortens the next step.

  2. 2

    Response within 24 hours

Complete RFQs get a priced quotation, or an acknowledgement with any questions needed to price them, within 24 hours (Sunday–Thursday).

  3. 3

    Documentation and client approval

CVs, iqama and trade documentation, with TUV or Aramco card copies where the trade holds one, are submitted for your review. Nobody mobilizes before you approve the profiles.

  4. 4

Mobilization within 48–72 hours of the PO

In-Kingdom personnel mobilize to sites anywhere in Saudi Arabia within 48–72 hours of the purchase order, subject to worker documents and site approvals. Every worker completes Gulf Orbit's safety induction before deployment, and is briefed on your site's permit-to-work and access requirements.

Documentation supplied with every worker

Iqama, identification and trade documentation are available for client review before mobilization. Where a client requires a specific certification or a trade test before a worker is accepted on site, say so in the requirement and it will be addressed during matching rather than after arrival.

Frequently asked questions

What does 3G mean in welding?

3G is the vertical position for a groove weld on plate. The number gives the position and the letter G means groove. 1G is flat, 2G horizontal, 3G vertical and 4G overhead. 5G and 6G are pipe positions.

Can a 3G welder weld pipe?

A 3G plate qualification does not cover small or medium pipe welded in fixed positions. For process piping, request 6G welders, or 5G where your procedure allows it, and keep 3G welders for plate and structural work.

Do 3G welders carry a TUV card?

No. Welders qualify by a procedure test (WPQ) to your welding procedure, not by a TUV card. The WPQ record comes with the CV, and many sites run their own 3G test before accepting a welder.

Which processes can 3G welders be requested for?

State the process in the RFQ: SMAW (stick) is common for vertical plate work, and GMAW or flux-cored welding is used where your procedure allows. The WPQ has to match the process as well as the position.

Can 3G and 6G welders be requested on the same RFQ?

Yes, and it is the better request when a job has both plate and pipe. List each grade as its own line with headcount and dates, so each welder is matched to the joints they will actually weld.

How quickly can 3G welders mobilize?

Mobilization of in-Kingdom personnel to project sites anywhere in Saudi Arabia takes 48–72 hours from purchase order (PO), subject to worker documents and site approvals.
