Scaffolding Calculator: Area, Volume, Bays and Lifts
Scaffolding is priced per square metre of façade or per cubic metre of access, so those are the first numbers a quotation needs. Façade area is length × height. Birdcage volume is length × width × height. Bays are the length divided by the bay length, rounded up, and lifts are the height divided by the lift height, rounded up. Enter your dimensions below to get all four.

Geometry only: a starting point for the RFQ, not a scaffold design. The quotation confirms the system, the material count and any ties, bracing or loading bays.
How to calculate scaffolding area (m²)
Measure the length of the scaffold along the face of the building or structure, and the height from the base to the top working platform plus the guardrail. Multiply them: a façade 30 m long and 12 m high is 360 m² of scaffolding. Measure each elevation on its own and add them, because corners, returns and set-backs change the length.
How to calculate scaffolding in cubic metres (m³)
A birdcage fills a room, a hall or the space under a roof or pipe rack, so it is measured as a volume: length × width × height. A birdcage 10 m by 8 m and 6 m high is 480 m³, on a plan area of 80 m². Inside plants, volume is also used for access around tanks and equipment where the scaffold wraps the item rather than standing against a flat face.
Bays, lifts and standard lines
A bay is the space between two pairs of standards along the scaffold; a lift is the vertical distance between two working levels. Divide the length by the bay length and the height by the lift height, and round each up. With 2.5 m bays and 2.0 m lifts, the 30 m × 12 m façade has 12 bays and 6 lifts. An independent scaffold has two rows of standards, so it needs one standard line per bay end in each row: 2 × (12 + 1) = 26 standard lines.
Bay length depends on the system and the load the platform carries, and lift height on the work. The common settings are offered in the calculator; the quotation confirms them for your job.
What the calculator does not cover
It does not count fittings, ledgers, transoms, boards or braces, and it does not check loads, ties or foundations. Those depend on the system, the duty rating, the wind exposure and the structure the scaffold ties into, and they are worked out for the quotation. Loading bays, cantilevers, bridges and stair towers are added on top of the figures here. See the scaffolding parts names guide for what each component is, and the scaffolding price guide for how these figures turn into a price.
Scaffolding calculation questions
What is the formula for scaffolding area?
Scaffolding area in square metres is the length of the scaffold multiplied by its height. A façade 30 m long and 12 m high is 360 m².
How do you calculate scaffolding in cubic metres?
Multiply length × width × height of the space the scaffold fills. A birdcage 10 m × 8 m × 6 m is 480 m³.
How many bays and lifts does a scaffold have?
Divide the length by the bay length and the height by the lift height, and round each up. With 2.5 m bays and 2.0 m lifts, a 30 m × 12 m façade has 12 bays and 6 lifts.
Can the calculator tell me how many pieces of scaffolding I need?
No. Component counts depend on the system, duty rating, ties and the structure, so they are worked out for the quotation. Send the area or volume with drawings or photos, and a complete RFQ gets a reply within 24 hours.
Gulf Orbit rents cuplock, ringlock and tube-and-coupler steel scaffolding, with or without erection and dismantling, to sites in every Saudi city. See scaffolding rental and erection or the scaffolding overview.
