Shutdown and Turnaround Scaffolding in Saudi Arabia
Gulf Orbit supplies scaffolding for plant shutdowns and turnarounds: cuplock, ringlock and tube-and-coupler material, TUV-certified scaffolders, helpers, lead scaffolders and supervisors, including Aramco-approved scaffolding supervisors where a site requires one. Crews can work on our material or on yours, on day and night shifts, and Gulf Orbit has supplied turnaround crews in Jubail Industrial City, Ras Tanura and Yanbu. Send the access list and the window dates, and a complete RFQ gets a reply within 24 hours.
All scaffolding servicesWhy scaffolding sets the pace of a shutdown
In a shutdown, almost nothing starts until access is up. Inspectors, mechanical fitters, insulation strippers and painters all wait for scaffolds around exchangers, columns, vessels and pipework, and every delay in erection is a delay to the whole window. Scaffolders are among the first trades on site and the last to leave, because every structure built for the work must be struck after box-up.
That makes the scaffold headcount steep at both ends of the window and lower in the middle, when the work is modifying scaffolds as items are opened and closed. A crew planned on one average number is either short at the peaks or idle in between.
Three phases: before, during and after the window
Before the window: access that does not need the unit down, such as structures on pipe racks, around tank shells or at high-level platforms, can be built in the days or weeks before shutdown, which shortens the critical first days.
During the window: scaffolds are modified as items are opened, inspected and repaired, often around the clock. A modification crew on each shift, with its own lead scaffolder, keeps work fronts released on time.
After box-up: every scaffold is struck, material is counted and removed, and the area is cleared before start-up. Plan the dismantling crew with the same care as the erection crew; it decides when the plant can restart.
Typical shutdown access and the scaffold it needs
The access list, or scaffold register, is the heart of a shutdown scaffolding request. These pairings are where most plant items start; the final choice follows your drawings and the site's scaffold procedure.
| Plant item | Typical scaffold | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Heat exchanger | Tube and coupler around the shell and channel head | Leave room for bundle pulling and lifting gear |
| Column or tower | Ringlock or tube-and-coupler platforms at manways and trays | Heights and number of manways set the quantity |
| Vessel or reactor | Birdcage inside, towers outside | Confined-space rules apply inside |
| Storage tank | Independent scaffold or bracket platforms on the shell | Floating-roof and shell work need different access |
| Pipe rack | Underhung or cantilever scaffold from the rack | Live lines may stay in service nearby |
| Furnace or heater | Birdcage in the firebox, towers at burners | Refractory work loads the platforms |
What Gulf Orbit supplies
Three ways to buy, often mixed within one shutdown: rental of cuplock, ringlock and tube-and-coupler material with our crews erecting, modifying and dismantling it; rental of material only; or scaffolders on your material under your supervisor. Crews include TUV-certified scaffolders, helpers to move material, lead scaffolders and supervisors. Where the site requires it, an Aramco-approved scaffolding supervisor leads the crew; the approval belongs to that supervisor personally, not to Gulf Orbit.
Scaffolds are handed over under your site's own inspection and tagging procedure. Tell us who inspects and tags, and how often structures are re-inspected, so the supervisor plans the crew around that cycle. See the guide to scaffold types and tags.
Passes, documents and shifts
Every worker needs a gate pass, and passes depend on complete papers: iqama with the right profession, medical, insurance, induction records and the cards the site asks for. CVs and card copies are sent for your approval before mobilization, and in-Kingdom crews mobilize 48–72 hours from purchase order, subject to worker documents and site approvals. Send the pass process and its lead time early, because a crew held at the gate on day one costs the whole window.
Most windows run 12-hour day and night shifts. State the shift pattern, the peak headcount for each phase, and whether accommodation and transport are needed; they are quoted on request.

Shutdown scaffolding questions
Do you supply scaffolding for plant shutdowns and turnarounds?
Yes. Material in cuplock, ringlock and tube and coupler, with crews to erect, modify and dismantle it, or crews on your material. Gulf Orbit has supplied turnaround crews in Jubail Industrial City, Ras Tanura and Yanbu.
Can scaffolding be built before the shutdown starts?
Often, yes. Access that does not need the unit down, such as rack, tank and high-level structures, can go up before the window and shorten the first critical days.
Do you supply day and night scaffolding crews?
Yes. Each shift is planned with its own lead scaffolder, scaffolders and helpers, sized to the peak of each phase.
Can you supply an Aramco-approved scaffolding supervisor for a shutdown?
Yes, where the site requires one. The approval belongs to the supervisor personally, not to Gulf Orbit, and a copy of the approval card comes with the CV.
Who inspects and tags the scaffolds during the shutdown?
Whoever your site procedure names. Scaffolds are handed over under your inspection and tagging system, and the crew is planned around its re-inspection cycle.
How early should we send a shutdown scaffolding request?
As soon as the window dates and a draft access list exist. Passes, documents and material planning take time before the first shift.
