Bender or fixer: two halves of one job

Steel benders and steel fixers are often confused. The bender prepares bar: cutting it to length and bending it to the shapes on the schedule. The fixer places and ties that bar in the formwork. On most jobs the two work as one supply chain, and a shortage of benders shows up as fixers waiting for steel. Request both, with the balance set by your pour programme and whether bar arrives pre-bent from a supplier.

Working from the bar bending schedule

Everything a bender does comes from the bar bending schedule: bar mark, diameter, shape code, dimensions and quantity. Good benders read shape codes quickly, plan cutting to reduce offcuts, and check the first bar of every mark against the schedule before running the batch. Errors here are cheap to fix at the machine and expensive once the bar reaches the deck. Send a sample schedule with the RFQ if your detailing is complex.

Tags and stacking decide the fixers' day

Bent bar is only useful if the fixers can find it. Benders tag each bundle with bar mark and element, and stack bundles in the order they will be lifted to the deck. Mixed or untagged bundles cost the fixing crew hours of sorting at height. Agree your tagging and stacking system with the yard foreman on day one, and link it to the crane or delivery schedule so bar arrives in the sequence it is fixed.

Machine safety at the bending bench

Rebar shears and bending machines have pinch points and high forces, and most injuries in a bending yard happen at the machine. Benders keep guards in place, feed bar with the machine stopped, handle long bars in pairs, and wear gloves against sharp ends. Brief your yard rules before the first shift, and check the machines' condition and emergency stops, whoever supplies them.

What to check before they start

  • Check the CV against your bar sizes and the machines at your yard.
  • Check the first bar of each mark against the schedule before the batch is run.
  • Agree the tagging and stacking system, and the delivery sequence to the deck, on day one.
  • Check the condition, guards and emergency stops of the cutting and bending machines before work starts.
  • Agree how offcuts are recorded and reused, so waste is controlled from the first schedule.

Typical crew shape

Steel benders usually work at the yard with helpers who feed bar and move bundles, a storekeeper who controls bar stock by diameter, and a yard foreman who plans the schedules. On the deck, steel fixers place what the benders produce, under a civil foreman. Send the tonnage, bar sizes and pour dates, and the bender-to-fixer balance is proposed for your programme.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a steel bender and a steel fixer?

A steel bender cuts and bends reinforcement to the schedule. A steel fixer places and ties it in position before the pour. They are separate trades on the register, and most jobs need both.

Do steel benders read bar bending schedules?

Yes. Reading bar marks, shape codes and dimensions from the schedule is the core of the trade. If your schedules follow a specific standard or format, mention it in the RFQ.

Can benders work with automatic bending machines?

Name the machines your yard uses in the RFQ, whether manual benders, powered benders or automatic stirrup machines, so benders familiar with them are put forward.

How many benders do I need for my fixers?

It depends on whether bar arrives pre-bent, the bar sizes and the pour rate. Send the tonnage and pour programme, and the bender-to-fixer balance is proposed for your job.

Who supplies the cutting and bending machines?

Benders are supplied as manpower and work with the machines at your yard or site. State in the RFQ which machines are available.

How quickly can steel benders mobilize?

Mobilization of in-Kingdom personnel to project sites anywhere in Saudi Arabia takes 48–72 hours from purchase order (PO), subject to worker documents and site approvals.
