Natural stone varies from slab to slab in colour and veining. On feature floors and walls, the slabs are laid out dry, matched and numbered before fixing, so the veins run the way the designer intended. A fixer who only follows a grid can end up with a patchwork. Tell us whether your stone is book-matched, vein-directed or random, and whether dry-lay approval is required, so fixers who work that way are put forward.
Stone floors are usually wet-set on a mortar bed or adhesive, levelled slab by slab. Internal walls can be fixed with adhesive or mechanical fixings. External cladding and high walls are dry-fixed with stainless anchors and brackets, leaving a cavity behind the stone. These are different methods with different tools and inspections. State which fixing system your specification uses for each area.
Stairs show a stone fixer's skill more than any floor. Treads and risers have to be consistent in height and overhang, nosings must be even, and landings must meet the flights cleanly. Skirting, thresholds, window sills and vanity tops add templating and on-site cutting. If your scope includes stairs or custom details, say so, and share the shop drawings from the stone supplier.
After fixing, many stone floors are ground to remove lippage between slabs and then polished to the specified finish, and some stones are sealed. Once finished, stone must be protected from plaster, paint, grout and heavy traffic until handover. Say whether in-situ grinding and polishing is part of the scope, and agree the protection method, so the finish you paid for survives the last weeks of the programme.
Marble fixers usually work with helpers who carry slabs, mix and cut, and on heavy stone two fixers handle each slab. A foreman controls the layout, numbering and sequence against the stone deliveries. Tile fixers cover the ceramic and porcelain areas in the same building. Send the stone areas, details and delivery dates, and the crew is sized for your programme.
