Shuttering, finishing and gypsum are three different carpenters

The rate card separates carpenter (shuttering), carpenter (finishing) and carpenter (gypsum) for a reason: they are different skills used at different points in the programme. Shuttering is structural work during the frame. Finishing is joinery and second fix. Gypsum is partition and ceiling work. Name the one you need, because “carpenter” on its own leaves it to chance.

Formwork quality shows up later

Poorly aligned formwork is not a formwork problem for long. It becomes a plastering problem, then a tiling problem, then a snagging problem. When the finish specification is demanding, say so in the requirement so the crew is matched on that basis rather than on headcount alone.

Striking times and reuse

Formwork is not struck when the carpenters are ready. It is struck when the concrete has gained the strength your engineer specifies, and slabs are usually back-propped after striking. Striking too early risks the structure; striking late holds panels that the next pour needs. Plan the panel cycle with the pour sequence, and tell us whether the crew will also clean, oil and reset panels, so the headcount covers the full cycle.

System formwork or timber: the productivity question

System formwork pays off where elements repeat: typical floors, long walls, identical columns. Crews that know the system cycle it quickly. Timber and plywood formwork suits one-off shapes, transitions and small quantities, where cutting to fit is faster than adapting system parts. Many sites use both. State which system you use for which elements, so carpenters who have cycled that system are put forward for the repetitive work.

What to check before they start

Check the CV against your formwork type, timber or a named system, because productivity on a system depends on having used it.
Check the first column or wall set for line, level, plumb and tie spacing before it is closed up for the pour.
Agree the release agent and the panel cleaning routine, so reused panels do not mark the next pour.
Brief your rules on edge protection, propping and working platforms before the crew works at slab edges.
Confirm who inspects and approves formwork before each pour, so the crew knows who signs it off.

They sequence continuously with steel fixers, element by element, under a civil foreman who manages the pour programme.
