Block and plaster are usually one continuous requirement

Blockwork and plastering follow each other closely through a building, and clients who raise them as two separate requirements weeks apart often end up with a gap in between. If both are in your programme, raise them together and the crew can be phased rather than mobilized twice.

Wall area is a better brief than headcount

A requirement that says “ten masons” tells us nothing about whether ten is right. A requirement that gives wall area, block type and the date the floor is handed over lets the crew be sized against the actual work. Send what you know about the scope and the headcount can be proposed rather than guessed.

Built-in items and the MEP interface

Blockwork is where the electrical and plumbing trades first meet the walls. Conduits, back boxes, sleeves and openings for ducts are either built in as the wall rises or cut in afterwards, and cutting in costs time and weakens the wall. Agree the sequence with your MEP contractor, and make sure the masons have the openings and built-in items marked on the drawings before they start each floor.

Heat, curing and wall quality

Mortar dries fast in Saudi heat and wind, and a joint that dries before it cures is a weak joint. Good masons mix small batches, dampen blocks where the specification allows, and keep fresh walls out of direct sun and wind while they cure. In summer, the midday break for outdoor work also shapes the day. Share your working hours and curing requirements, so the crew plans its output around them.

What to check before they start

Check the CV against your block type, because lightweight and insulated block are laid differently from hollow concrete block.
Check the first courses for line, level, bond and joint thickness before the walls rise.
Agree who sets out the walls from the drawings, your surveyor or engineer, and have the first floor set out before the crew starts.
Confirm that conduits, boxes and sleeves to be built in are marked and on site before the walls go up.
Brief the crew on access for walls above head height, such as podiums or scaffolds, before they build off makeshift platforms.

Block masons usually work with helpers who mix mortar and keep block and mortar at the wall, and under a civil foreman who manages the floor sequence. Plaster masons follow on the same floors, and MEP trades build in their first fix as walls rise. Usually yes. Blockwork runs slowly without helpers moving material and mixing mortar. The crew proposal will include the ratio unless you tell us you are providing helpers yourself.

Can you supply masons for maintenance and fit-out rather than new build?

Yes. Mention it, since working inside an occupied or operating building changes access and working hours.

Do you supply plaster masons for the same job?

Yes. Plaster masons are a separate trade on the register; add them as a second line so plastering follows blockwork without a gap.

Is it better to send wall area or headcount?

Wall area, where you have it. It lets the crew be sized to the programme instead of guessed. Send both if you already have a headcount in mind.

Which block types do your masons lay?
