Crane Operator Categories in Saudi Arabia: Which Operator to Request
Mobile crane, tower crane, boom truck or forklift: each needs a different operator, and the card has to cover the machine on your site. How to match the operator to the equipment, and what to put in the RFQ.

Request the operator for the machine, not a general "crane operator". A mobile crane, a tower crane, a boom truck and a forklift each need a different operator, and on Saudi sites the operator's TUV card is commonly checked against the crane type and capacity. State the machine, its capacity and the site's card rules in the RFQ, and request riggers with it.
Key takeaways
- Name the machine: mobile crane (and its type), tower crane, boom truck or forklift.
- State the capacity: a card that covers a small crane may not cover a large one.
- Check that the TUV card on the CV covers the crane type and capacity on your site.
- A crane lift needs riggers too; request them with the operators.
- Gulf Orbit has supplied operators for mobile cranes from 25 t to over 250 t.
Why "crane operator" is not enough
An RFQ that asks for "two crane operators" can be answered in several ways, and most of them are wrong for the site. A mobile crane operator, a tower crane operator and a boom truck driver do different work on different machines, and the card each one holds is tied to the machine type. The fix is to request the operator for the machine you have, with its capacity, so the CVs and card copies you receive can be checked against it before mobilization.
The main categories
The table lists the lifting-equipment operators most often requested on Saudi project sites.
| Operator | Typical machines | Card commonly checked on site | State in the RFQ |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mobile crane operator | Truck-mounted, rough-terrain and all-terrain cranes | TUV operator card covering the crane type and capacity | Crane type, make and capacity; lift programme |
| Tower crane operator | Tower cranes on building and infrastructure projects | TUV operator card that covers tower cranes | Crane make, model and jib length; working hours |
| Heavy driver (boom truck / HIAB) | Truck-mounted loader cranes, low-bed and flatbed trailers | Licence class for the vehicle; TUV card where the site requires it | Vehicle and crane type; whether it lifts on site |
| Forklift operator | Counterbalance, telehandler and warehouse forklifts | TUV operator card | Forklift type and capacity; yard or warehouse |
Matching the card to the machine
On Saudi sites the operator's TUV card is commonly checked before the first lift, and the check is against the machine on site, not the trade name.
- Crane type: a card for mobile cranes does not cover a tower crane, and the reverse.
- Capacity: check that the card covers the capacity of the crane on site, not only a smaller crane.
- Validity: the card should stay valid for the whole requirement, not expire mid-project.
- Site certification: where the site requires Aramco-certified operators, say so; both Aramco-certified and non-Aramco operators are available.
- Copies first: card copies are sent with the CVs for your approval before mobilization. For all trades that carry a card, see TUV card requirements by trade.
Operators and riggers are one request
A crane does not lift alone. Each lift needs an operator, one or more riggers to sling the load and signal the crane, and a lift supervisor who owns the lift plan. Gulf Orbit supplies TUV-carded Level III riggers, who sling and signal; rigging arrangements (Level II) and lift supervision (Level I) stay with your team. See rigger levels explained for what each level does. Requesting operators and riggers together lets the crew be sized for the lifting programme, including a second rigger for blind lifts.
What Gulf Orbit supplies
Gulf Orbit has supplied operators for mobile cranes from 25 t to over 250 t, covering truck-mounted, rough-terrain and all-terrain cranes, and supplies tower crane operators, heavy drivers and forklift operators to projects anywhere in Saudi Arabia. Complete RFQs get a response within 24 hours. In-Kingdom personnel mobilize 48–72 hours from purchase order, subject to worker documents and site approvals. For outage work, see manpower for a refinery turnaround; when the machine and dates are known, send the RFQ.
Frequently asked questions
Is a mobile crane operator the same as a tower crane operator?
No. They operate different machines and hold cards for different crane types. Request the operator for the crane you have on site.
What capacity of mobile crane can Gulf Orbit's operators handle?
Gulf Orbit has supplied operators for truck-mounted, rough-terrain and all-terrain mobile cranes from 25 t to over 250 t. State the crane and its capacity in the RFQ so the operator's card is matched to it.
Do crane operators need a TUV card in Saudi Arabia?
On industrial sites, and on construction sites that ask for it, a TUV operator card is commonly required, and it is checked against the crane type and capacity. TUV-carded operators are available, and card copies come with the CVs.
Should riggers be requested with crane operators?
Yes. Each lift needs riggers to sling and signal as well as the operator. Gulf Orbit supplies Level III riggers; lift supervision stays with your team.
